Woke Up in a Strange Place

Galley Proof es la nueva novela de Eric Arvin. Y como siempre en él, el núcleo central del relato va más allá de la mera historia de amor. O la historia de amor no es más que una excusa para desarrollar personajes floridos, llenos de matices, heridos y voluntariosos; prendados en la mitología del autor y, debido a esto, sometidos a fuerzas telúricas que arrancan siempre del exterior pero que todo lo arrasan, para dar paso a una libertad pura, libre de cualquier sentimiento de ansia y lleno de alegría.

Con todo, este nuevo relato más en la línea de Simple Men, pero a la vez mucho más maduro, nos muestra a un Eric Arvin que crece, dejando atrás el ambiente del College norteamericano. Sus protagonistas son hombres que viven el mundo adulto, que trabajan y que desean y que, secretamente, esperan el momento adecuado para florecer. La historia que se teje entre el escritor Logan, cuyas rutinas se alteran lentamente luchando contra el bloqueo del escritor, y de Brock, su editor y objeto de secreto deseo, nos lleva por los meandros tranquilos y simpáticos de una escritura ligera, que se lee con avidez; florida, como todos sus relatos, llena de un inglés preciosista y brillante, certero y siempre redentor. Si algo hay en Eric Arvin es su amor por todo lo que escribe: no hay ningún personaje, por desviado y cruel que sea, que no termine redimido (como ocurre en Woke Up In A Strange Place, por citar el ejemplo más reciente); nada hay en el mundo de Eric Arvin vacío de contenido y, por lo mismo, inútil; y todo tiene cabida: personajes de otras historias, como los de Subsurdity o la ya citada Simple Men; algo de ese realismo mágico tan de The Rest Is Illusion, para mí su mejor obra; y la recurrencia continua a ecos de su propia vida, escondidos pero entrañables, que el lector avezado en sus libros puede encontrar y disfrutar como nuevos encuentros inolvidables.

Y he ahí lo que me ha gustado de Galley Proof: todo es distinto, todo evoluciona. Logan, un escritor atascado en sí mismo; Brock, un editor que huye de un pasado; ambos, dos hombres jóvenes que desean liberarse de sus cadenas desconocidas y que se aventuran con miedo a veces y con mucho humor, en el descubrimiento de un amor que los hará diferentes y los llevará al vértigo del cambio y, por lo tanto, a la libertad.

Galley Proof es un dulce caramelo, un divertimento mucho más serio de lo que parece, lleno de esperanza y de fantasía, la fantasía que hace de Eric Arvin un escritor fresco, creativo, productivo y siempre, siempre, digno de leer.

Galley Proof is Eric Arvin’s new novel. And, as always, the central core of the story goes far beyond the story itself. Or, if you like, the core of the story is more than an excuse to develop such great and strong characters, each one of them baptized in his author’s own mythology and, by this, make them to develop and to change, always, in search of freedom.

Though more in the line of Simple Men, Galley Proof is a more mature story, maybe it is the most mature book of Eric Arvin till now. The characters are not frat boys anymore: they are grown up men looking for something. And that something is what Logan’s and Brock’s story is about. Logan, a writer with a fierce and an unknown force inside him pushing to flourish; Brock, the handsome editor, in the verge of a desired change that he’s afraid of, intertwined in a very poetic, humouristic, and brilliant prose in a very Arvin’s style, are the main center of the story. But they’re not alone in this new adventure. They will be face off to other characters that are known by us, and doing so, Eric Arvin just draw his very own creative world in an eternal loop of constant change. One of his wonderful and main characteristics as a writer.

Doing so, he intertwined Subsurdity and Simple Men and, even so, The Rest Is Illusion (he cannot be himself without a glimpse of the magic realism he’s so in love with.) And doing so, we find some glimpses of his very own life, wisely hidden in the branches of a love story that is far from a love story but just a perfect one indeed.

And that’s what I liked about Galley Proof: everything changes, everything develops. Logan needs to change to activate his writing but his life; Brock needs to leave his past behind; both of them need to open to each other to find a nestle to build this wonderful love full of passionate sex and tenderness and comprehension and, once again, redemption and freedom.

Lovely, fresh, funny, full of Eric Arvin’s places and wonders, Galley Proof is just a delight, a candy stick, a sweet gellato to enjoy and to re-read over and over again.

Woke Up in a Strange Place es un relato sobre un viaje, y como tal, lleno de sorpresas, descubrimientos y lecciones que aprender. Es un libro iniciático y poético, embellecido por una prosa fluida y sonora, de resultas que parece un largo poema en donde todas las escenas se mezclan y bailan una coreografía dictada por el amor, el aprendizaje y la libertad.

Todo escritor alberga dentro de sí un mundo único, lleno de reverberancias, de ecos de todo aquello que sueña o conoce y que atesora a lo largo de su vida. Woke Up in a Strange Place resume el maravilloso universo de Eric Arvin y nos enseña todo aquello que el autor ha aprendido a lo largo de su muy difícil vida, y nos regala un rayo de esperanza y de gracioso libertinaje a la vez. Es un libro que nos descubre aquello que puede estar detrás del negro olvido de la muerte, aquello que puede ser (y quién sabe no será) un viaje maravilloso que empieza, como el relato, en el mismo final.

Joe es el protagonista de este libro lleno de poesía. Un personaje desestructurado cuya única misión es buscarse, conseguirse y amarse por completo. Sólo personas de la talla de Eric Arvin son capaces de darse cuenta que el amor hacia nosotros mismos, el completo, transigente, irrevocable e infinito amor hacia lo que somos, cómo somos y hemos hecho, es la llave a la liberación y a la felicidad. Woke Up in a Strange Place nos descubre un mundo onírico, con nubes de algodón de azúcar, océanos de libertad, praderas infinitas de cielos color malva; personajes alados, animales humanos, neblinas torturadas, cantos engañosos, libertinos parajes en la que todos los sexos se reconocen y se disfrutan, y personajes todos que se redimen, todos, en el simple acto de aceptarse a sí mismos, de entenderse y de quererse.

Es un libro optimista pero no dulce; es un libro firme pero fluido, lleno de una prosa maravillosa, rítmica, que navega dulcemente entre los meandros de sentimientos torturados, olvidos que se recuerdan y recuerdos que cobran vida. Woke Up in a Strange Place is a story of a journey, and like so, plenty of surprises, discoveries and lessons to learn.

It is an initiatory tale, filled with a beautiful and poetic prose, so we are immersed in an ocean of scenes full of a choreographed dance dictated by Freedom and Love.

Any writer lodges within himself an unique world built with echoes of what he dreamed and he learned throughout life. Woke Up in a Strange Place summarizes the wonderful universe of Eric Arvin and inside it we find everything the author has learned throughout his very difficult life in the form of a ray of hope and graceful libertinism. It is a book that discovers us what might be behind the black curtain of death, a wonderful trip that begins, like the story, at the very end of the road. Joe is the main character of this poetic story. A unstructured character whose unique mission is to look for and to obtain the real truth, the real love: that one we have to give to ourselves.

Only people of the stature of Eric Arvin are able to realize that love towards ourselves, the complete, irrevocable and infinite love towards which we are, how we are and what we have done, is the key to liberation and happiness. Woke Up in a Strange Place discovers an oniric world, a world fills with clouds of sugar, oceans of freedom, infinite mallow prairies; winged characters; animal-humans; tortured fogs, deceptive songs; libertine places in which all the sexes are accepted and enjoyed, and redeemed characters, all, in the simple act to accept themselves as themselves, understood and loved.

It is an optimistic but nonsweet book; it is a firm but fluid story; written with a wonderful and musical prose, that sails sweetly between meanders of tortured feelings, remembrances relived and lost memories recovered. To read Woke Up in a Strange Place is an oniric and sensorial experience, like sinking the head under the water and removing it full of energy and joy. Eric Arvin gives happiness to us, not without challenges, never after short cuts, and transforms all of us into Joe, the character that, with a puppy confidence, ties one by one the pieces of his life, and discovers that Life is wonderful in both sides of the spectrum, as we do with this novel.

Eric Arvin is looking for his place in Literature. And he will obtain it for sure.
