Galley Proof es la nueva novela de Eric Arvin. Y como siempre en él, el núcleo central del relato va más allá de la mera historia de amor. O la historia de amor no es más que una excusa para desarrollar personajes floridos, llenos de matices, heridos y voluntariosos; prendados en la mitología del autor y, debido a esto, sometidos a fuerzas telúricas que arrancan siempre del exterior pero que todo lo arrasan, para dar paso a una libertad pura, libre de cualquier sentimiento de ansia y lleno de alegría.

   Con todo, este nuevo relato más en la línea de Simple Men, pero a la vez mucho más maduro, nos muestra a un Eric Arvin que crece, dejando atrás el ambiente del College norteamericano. Sus protagonistas son hombres que viven el mundo adulto, que trabajan y que desean y que, secretamente, esperan el momento adecuado para florecer. La historia que se teje entre el escritor Logan, cuyas rutinas se alteran lentamente luchando contra el bloqueo del escritor, y de Brock, su editor y objeto de secreto deseo, nos lleva por los meandros tranquilos y simpáticos de una escritura ligera, que se lee con avidez; florida, como todos sus relatos, llena de un inglés preciosista y brillante, certero y siempre redentor. Si algo hay en Eric Arvin es su amor por todo lo que escribe: no hay ningún personaje, por desviado y cruel que sea, que no termine redimido (como ocurre en Woke Up In A Strange Place, por citar el ejemplo más reciente); nada hay en el mundo de Eric Arvin vacío de contenido y, por lo mismo, inútil; y todo tiene cabida: personajes de otras historias, como los de Subsurdity o la ya citada Simple Men; algo de ese realismo mágico tan de The Rest Is Illusion, para mí su mejor obra; y la recurrencia continua a ecos de su propia vida, escondidos pero entrañables, que el lector avezado en sus libros puede encontrar y disfrutar como nuevos encuentros inolvidables.

   Y he ahí lo que me ha gustado de Galley Proof: todo es distinto, todo evoluciona. Logan, un escritor atascado en sí mismo; Brock, un editor que huye de un pasado; ambos, dos hombres jóvenes que desean liberarse de sus cadenas desconocidas y que se aventuran con miedo a veces y con mucho humor, en el descubrimiento de un amor que los hará diferentes y los llevará al vértigo del cambio y, por lo tanto, a la libertad.

   Galley Proof es un dulce caramelo, un divertimento mucho más serio de lo que parece, lleno de esperanza y de fantasía, la fantasía que hace de Eric Arvin un escritor fresco, creativo, productivo y siempre, siempre, digno de leer.

   Galley Proof is Eric Arvin’s new novel. And, as always, the central core of the story goes far beyond the story itself. Or, if you like, the core of the story is more than an excuse to develop such great and strong characters, each one of them baptized in his author’s own mythology and, by this, make them to develop and to change, always, in search of freedom.

   Though more in the line of Simple Men, Galley Proof is a more mature story, maybe it is the most mature book of Eric Arvin till now. The characters are not frat boys anymore: they are grown up men looking for something. And that something is what Logan’s and Brock’s story is about. Logan, a writer with a fierce and an unknown force inside him pushing to flourish; Brock, the handsome editor, in the verge of a desired change that he’s afraid of, intertwined in a very poetic, humouristic, and brilliant prose in a very Arvin’s style, are the main center of the story. But they’re not alone in this new adventure. They will be face off to other characters that are known by us, and doing so, Eric Arvin just draw his very own creative world in an eternal loop of constant change. One of his wonderful and main characteristics as a writer.

   Doing so, he intertwined Subsurdity and Simple Men and, even so, The Rest Is Illusion (he cannot be himself without a glimpse of the magic realism he’s so in love with.) And doing so, we find some glimpses of his very own life, wisely hidden in the branches of a love story that is far from a love story but just a perfect one indeed.

   And that’s what I liked about Galley Proof: everything changes, everything develops. Logan needs to change to activate his writing but his life; Brock needs to leave his past behind; both of them need to open to each other to find a nestle to build this wonderful love full of passionate sex and tenderness and comprehension and, once again, redemption and freedom.

   Lovely, fresh, funny, full of Eric Arvin’s places and wonders, Galley Proof is just a delight, a candy stick, a sweet gellato to enjoy and to re-read over and over again.
