Hace justamente un año pasé dos días inolvidables en París. Todo fue maravilloso: el clima, templado y con viento agradable al paso; gente encantadora; elegancia por doquier; comodidad para el turista; belleza arrebatadora; tiendas maravillosas; moda de rebajas y nueva temporada ya en la calle; y buena comida (sin llegar a ser estupenda.) Fueron dos días de pura libertad, en los que el mundo se detuvo para mí en las calles de París, diluyéndose en su algarabía, su siempre presencia y, debo confesarlo, en mi dolor de pies.

A year ago I was in Paris. Just for a couple of days. And they were fantastic. I knew right away it was a city for me: elegant people in the streets; comodities; beautifulness and this summer breeze gentle and fresh. Paris was a dream, and I learnt that I love European cities (like the one I’m living at), and that all of them have so many things to offer, so much beauty and so much life in their streets… That I just loved to be in Paris…,twice.

París es mágica y asombrosa, lo mismo que Madrid es grandiosa y abierta; Barcelona tiene el arrullo del mar y Múnich el abrazo de las montañas, y Berlín el espíritu de lo renacido…Todas las ciudades europeas en las que he estado me han regalado bellos momentos; hermosas imágenes y un sinnúmero de recuerdos. Todas son especiales y todas, pese al tópico, son únicas.

Paris is unique. As well as Madrid and Berlin and Muncih and Barcelona are. Their beauty is magnetic; their parks, buidilngs, history and life are so different but equals in gravitational power, in attraction. I love them all. And I left a piece of me in all of them. But in Paris I was more than happy; alone with myself; tasted the most exquisite of parisian cuisine; wearing this elegant clothes and walk by Champs Elysées like a real parisian…Everybody wonders that I didn’t be one! Incredible…

Me he aficionado a visitar ciudades en el mínimo de tiempo, de modo que tres días me resultan más que suficientes. No es necesario llevar un itinerario con todo marcado; ni se requiere ver todo lo que se tiene que ver…Lo mejor es percibir la vida de las ciudades en la calle; captar sus olores, la forma de vida; los saludos, las negativas; la pobreza y la inmensa riqueza que habita en nuestras capitales… Las obras de arte, infinitas y maravillosas, están bien. Pero sólo voy a ver aquéllas que me atrapan el corazón. Las demás…, quedan para una visita posterior. Siempre hay que dejar algo pendiente.

I was happy in Paris. And I will never forget the real freedom its streets inspirated in me. Madrid, as well as Berlin and Munich, gave to me the same spirit of liberty, the same ectasy of joy and happiness.

Y sí, siempre nos quedará París y sus puentes; sus calles arboladas, sus cafés recoletos y sus locuras y miserias de gran ciudad. Y, por supuesto, su Torre Eiffel.

Berlín puede que no sea la ciudad más hermosa, pero tiene vida en sus calles, efervescencia, ese tono vital que la hace, como Nueva York, más un estado mental que una ciudad de acero, cristal y granito.

Maybe Berlin isn’t the most beautiful city of Europe, but has so much life in its streets, so much spirit, that makes itself go far beyond the city concept; like New York, Berlin is a state of mind.

Berlín tiene el espíritu de lo Indomable. Reconoce sus errores, los asume, muestra sus heridas sin el menor rastro de orgullo, y se hace futuro llena de nuevas energías, de maravillosa arquitectura y de renovación.

Berlín has the spirit of the Indomitable. Assumes its mistakes, evolve with them but it’s fearless about its future, embracing the New with this contagious force and power.

Y en Berlín encontramos la más moderna arquitectura, los avances técnicos más sorprendentes, sin que choquen con el pasado, sin resultar violentos, en un maridaje asombroso.

And in Berlin we can find this incredible marriage between the new architecture, always shine and fertile, with the historical avenues and buildings, in a perfect and eternal bond.

Estuve en Múnich en primavera. Por casualidad, como casi todo lo que me ha ocurrido en la vida. Y, también por casualidad, lo que iba a ser una ciudad carcomida de frío, me recibió siendo una belleza ataviada de sol y flores. Sé que tuve mucha suerte con el clima de Múnich esa primavera; tanto, que los lugareños estaban tan encantados como yo, que descubría la esencia bávara (de la que están muy orgullosos los muniqueses) y la belleza de una ciudad preciosa, pequeña dentro de su importancia, y muy acogedora; y del encuentro con el espíritu alemán, con el que me pude identificar sin miedos.

I was in Munich in springtime. It was a beautiful week, plenty of sun and flowers and beer. But, even knowing I was lucky about weather, Munich blossomed in all its pure spirit and beauty. It’s a pretty city, so beautiful, tender and warm as its citizens, friendly and proud of its Bavarian soul. It was my first touch with German spirit, and it was a collision. My very own spirit identifies with it and I felt like I was at home. I fell in love with Germany through Munich, and even everybody knows Bavarian Region is not exactly like the rest of Germany, it has the same strengh, the same determination and stubborness…And, God, I love that!

Los muniqueses son abiertos, dentro de lo que podemos ser con cualquier extraño; tienden a la sonrisa, y hablan otros idiomas aparte del los propios, como el inglés. Sin embargo intentan esforzarse en hacerse entender, y sonríen abiertamente ante los esfuerzos inútiles que hacía en alemán. Tienen enormes parques, y zonas verdes dentro de la ciudad que se recorre andando. Y sus gustos por los pasajes (propios del centro y norte de Europa) hace que pasear por la ciudad sea más un ejercicio de admiración que un simple ejercicio físico.

If someone would ask me where I’d want to live if I could chosen to, I must admit Germany would be on the list… I love Munich’s peace; how open and proud its people are; and the warm and welcoming they’re.
